Sprain?!
- A sprain is a torn or overstretched ligament (the connective tissue that joins two bones together). You can sprain a join, like twisting an ankle while stepping off a curb; a muscle cannot be strained.
-You often hear a loud pop with this kind of injury, causing a bruise and swelling, and feeling pain when pressure is applied to the injured area.
- Treatment for a sprained ankle is to keep your shoe on for as long possible (keeps the ankle from swelling). Also follow the ‘RICE’ formula to treat sprains.
- Rest (the first 24-48 hours)
- Ice (for the first 48 hours, 20 mins at a time, every 3-4 hours)
- Compression (ace bandage to wrap the area, wrap should be snug but not too tight)
- Elevate (try to get it higher than hour heart, place pillows under the arm or leg)
- To prevent a sprain, strengthening the surrounding muscle will do the job. For example doingcalf workouts keeps your ankles firm and less vulnerable to injuries.
