Shoulder Strain

-Causes:
- overhead exercises
- usually occur in sports such as(football, baseball, gymnastics)
- excessive training can overwork the shoulder muscles and tendons(resulting in swelling, pain, or numbness)
*Overuse injury starts with little pain but gradually worsens as the athlete continues to use the shoulder.
-Most common injuries include;
- shoulder tendinitis
- rotator cuff tendinitis
-Healing & Recovery
- rest the arm(a sling may be useful to take the weight off the shoulder)
- ice should be applied over the injured area every couple hours to reduce swelling (ice stimulates the flow of blood to and from the damaged area)
- avoid heat penetrating creams as it will delay recovery
- If problem continues, seek medical advice(there may be a risk of a sprain or cracked bone)
Tips:
- always warm up adequately(increases lubrication, range of motion and oxygen flow to the area)
- check equipment
- use appropriate weights and proper form
