Shoulder Strain

-Causes:

  • overhead exercises
  • usually occur in sports such as(football, baseball, gymnastics)
  • excessive training can overwork the shoulder muscles and tendons(resulting in swelling, pain, or numbness)

*Overuse injury starts with little pain but gradually worsens as the athlete continues to use the shoulder.

-Most common injuries include;

  • shoulder tendinitis 
  • rotator cuff tendinitis

-Healing & Recovery

  • rest the arm(a sling may be useful to take the weight off the shoulder)
  • ice should be applied over the injured area every couple hours to reduce swelling (ice stimulates the flow of blood to and from the damaged area)
  • avoid heat penetrating creams as it will delay recovery
  • If problem continues, seek medical advice(there may be a risk of a sprain or cracked bone)

Tips:

  • always warm up adequately(increases lubrication, range of motion and oxygen flow to the area)
  • check equipment
  • use appropriate weights and proper form
